How to prepare for a transplant
Preparing for a transplant is a life-changing journey that begins long before the operation. It’s about getting your body, mind, and lifestyle ready for the best possible outcome. Whether you’re waiting for a kidney or supporting someone through the process, preparation is key.
What To Do When You Realize You Have Liver Issues
If you suspect liver issues, seek medical attention immediately. Stop alcohol consumption, avoid over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen, and switch to a liver-friendly diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Watch for symptoms such as fatigue, jaundice, or abdominal swelling. Stay hydrated, avoid processed foods, and get tested to identify the underlying cause. Early detection and lifestyle changes are key to managing or reversing liver problems.
🥗 General Guidelines for a Renal (Kidney & Liver) Diet
Following a renal diet—tailored for people with kidney and/or liver concerns—helps manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and prevent complications. The key is controlling your intake of certain nutrients like sodium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, and fluids. Here's a clear guide for managing both kidney and liver health through diet:
Limit Sodium (Salt)
Helps reduce blood pressure and fluid retention.
Avoid: Salted snacks, canned soups, processed meats, fast food.
Use: Herbs, lemon, garlic, onion, or sodium-free seasonings for flavor.
Control Protein Intake
Too much protein stresses the kidneys; too little affects liver repair.
For CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease): Limit protein, especially from red meat.
For Liver Disease: Choose high-quality proteins in moderate amounts.
Good sources: Eggs, fish, chicken (skinless), tofu, or beans (in moderation).
Watch Phosphorus
Damaged kidneys can't remove excess phosphorus, which can weaken bones.
Avoid: Dark sodas, organ meats, processed cheese, packaged baked goods.
Use instead: Rice milk (non-enriched), fresh fruits, and vegetables.
Limit Potassium (if needed)
High potassium can affect heart rhythm.
Avoid or limit: Bananas, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, spinach.
Use instead: Apples, grapes, cauliflower, cucumbers.
Fluid Intake
For kidney disease, fluid restriction may be necessary to avoid swelling or high blood pressure.
For liver disease with ascites or swelling, limit fluids and salt.
Tips: Use small cups, track daily intake, suck on ice chips or lemon wedges.
Reduce Fat and Sugar
Liver disease is often worsened by fatty liver, diabetes, or obesity.
Avoid: Fried foods, pastries, sugary drinks, alcohol.
Use: Whole grains, lean meats, fresh vegetables.
Alcohol
Avoid completely, especially for liver disease or post-transplant care.
